Buy and Download Description Although many representatives of German Jewry, and also many non- Jews, believed that Hitler would not hold onto power long, they soon began to develop a network of economic and social aid services designed to help people in distress. To some extent they could fall back upon already existing structures that had been set up to help Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe, who largely belonged to the lower classes. Trained and experienced social workers stood ready to help. It was upon this foundation that in March 1933 the Central Office for Jewish Economic Assistance was set up and, on April 13, the Central Committee of German Jews for Help and Reconstruction, which was later incorporated into the Reich Agency for German Jews. It was created on September 17, 1933, as the first political agency representing all German Jews—whether Zionist or assimilated, orthodox or liberal.
