Your assignment is to find a recent research article (published since 2011) from a peer-reviewed journal that relates to a topic in education. You will summarize the question the authors are addressing, the main findings in the article, and how the results of the research could be utilized in an actual classroom. The paper will be worth a total of 70 points. I encourage each of you to discuss your article with me before handing in your paper (that is not required, though). If the article you choose discusses more than one experiment, you should only write about one experiment for this assignment.

In particular, the paper should include the following parts:
1.Briefly describe the question or hypothesis the experiment designed to answer. Address the question in general terms that a non-expert could understand rather that the technical language that might be used in the article.
2.Methods: Briefly summarize how the experiment was conducted. What were the independent and dependent variables?
3.Results: Briefly summarize the results of the experiment. Stick to the results that relate back to the methods you discussed in the Methods section. Summarize the results in words, not by repeating the numbers.
4.Conclusions: How do the results you reported relate to the question? Stick to conclusions that relate to the results you reported in the Results section.
5.Relevance to Educational Psychology: How might these results be useful to teachers in real classrooms? Give at least one specific suggestion of what a teacher could do that would capitalize on the conclusions of the experiment.

Format of paper: The paper you hand in  should be no more than two pages in length (double spaced.) You may find this to be short, but part of the point of the assignment is for you to be as concise as possible with your writing. The research article should be published in a relevant peer-reviewed journal. you can use the PsychINFO database (through the library’s website) to search for articles. This database can be searched either by keywords, authors, or you can pick an article and then see which more recent articles have cited that article. You must turn in a hard copy of your paper, and attach a complete copy of the article when you turn in your paper. Other than these requirements, I will not be particular about the formatting.
Due date: The paper will be due on November 21, as indicated in the Schedule of Topics. For each day that the paper is late, 10 points will be deducted from your grade.
Plagiarism: You must write the paper in your own words. If you copy phrases or sentences from the article into your summary without quoting them, that is plagiarism. If your paper is plagiarized, you will fail the course. There is a link posted on Blackboard for a website that has a lot of useful information about plagiarism. I encourage you to look at it or talk to me if you have any questions about plagiarism.

List of writing issues: This is a list of issues that I have seen in many student papers in the past. I am giving you the list for two reasons: 1. So that you can pay attention to these frequent problems in students’ writing and avoid them. 2. If I see one of these issues while I am grading the papers, I will write the letter that corresponds to the issue. You can use this Table to interpret the comments, should they come up. Note: This list is adapted from a list created by Kathy Pezdek.
