PSY 399: Literary Analysis

Choose one of the following books:

Anderson, M.T. Feed

The written part of this assignment is to complete a 3-5 page paper (plus a title page and reference list) on one character’s self-development. Your task is to connect what you discover about the character’s sense of self to any of the weekly readings or lecture notes. In other words, what did you learn in the weekly reading/class discussions that was portrayed in the book. Your analysis should reflect a clear and critical understanding of the character’s self-development.

Choose five quotes that are reflective of the character’s development. These quotes may be related to an insight, emotional experience, or some action that helps define or explain the character’s sense of self.

Start your paper with an introductory paragraph. Then, introduce each quote by giving a context for the situation.

For example: Johnny had just discovered that his friends were not always honest about their activities at work. Johnny reflected “Never had I felt so betrayed….etc.”

After the quote, describe the character’s sense of self and the meaning the quote has to the character’s life and development. As you develop your paper, make sure to integrate information from any readings in the Brown text, class notes, or the supplemental readings. Your task is to tie your interpretation/explanation of the character’s self-development in each quote to our readings and discussions. Make sure you use appropriate citations throughout your paper, including citing the quotes you choose. Remember that all quotation citations need page numbers.

Structure of the Paper:

  1. Title Page (Title and author of the book, as well as your information)

  2. Introduce the character (5-8 sentences). Be brief!!

  3. Body of the paper – Use five quotes from the book to demonstrate content related to the character’s self and/or ego development. Analyze and discuss the importance of the quote using information from the readings, theories discussed, PowerPoint presentations, and/or class discussions.

  4. Conclusion: Describe your understanding of the character’s sense of self at the end of the book.

  5. All information/quotes must be cited appropriately, including page number. You may use any writing style you know best (APA, MLA, Chicago Style, etc.)
