These journal entries are designed to allow you to see how your own personal experiences or situations are relevant to the kinds of things that sociologists study. You will not be asked to share them with anyone other than the instructor of this class. It is hoped that this will allow you to be open and honest when controversial or personal topics are explored.

Part I: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #5)

If you are or have been in a relationship with another person and the relationship is/was one that you would consider romantic and exclusive, how did you find that other person? For instance, was it intentional, such as a planned date that was intended as a way to get to know someone who might turn out to be a partner in a romantic relationship? Or was it more “accidental,” such as meeting someone while you both were in a larger group of people such as at church, in a club of some kind, at a sports event, etc.? How typical is this way of getting together for people of your generation?

If you are not or have not been in an exclusive romantic relationship with someone, how do you think you will attempt to meet someone when you are ready to do so? Why do you think you will choose this method of meeting a potential romantic partner?

Part II: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #6)

Americans and most Europeans either have married or intend to marry someone with whom they have “fallen in love.” On the other hand, most cultures follow a practice that is some variation of arranged marriage. That is, someone other than the future bride and groom arranges for the couple to marry each other. There is usually an effort made to choose marriage partners who will be complementary to each other. That is, the couple will have personalities and qualities that will make them good partners for each other. In many cases, the bride and groom have not met before the wedding ceremony.

Assuming that you will get married (or already are married), which of these two ways of finding a marriage partner do you think will happen or has already happened in your case? What advantages can you see to finding a partner by the other method, not the one that you did or will use?
