Karate-do is the Japanese martial art translated as The Way of the Empty Hand.

The art is taught partly through the use of kata - forms.  These set patterns of movement are often just used as part of the examination process for new belts.  The application of these movements is called bunkai, yet that word actually translates as analysis.  To use, apply, is oyo.

In the Bunkai Strategies free Newsletter, John Burke renshi teaches principles of application in bite sized chunks.  The free Newsletter is available on subscription from bunkai.co.uk - there is usually a video component which can be viewed at tv.bunkai.co.uk

The free video is expanded and added to here for the paying subscribers.  The Bunkai Gold series features more in-depth answers and information about the application of Karate kata.

In this video, which includes the Bunkai Strategies video to keep for the sake of completionism, we take a look at the end sequence from Heian Nidan or Pinan Nidan.  These low shuto uchi are also seen in Kanku Dai, Bassai Dai, and Kanku Sho.  We certainly don't want to use them for blocking kicks, so here we have some close-in applications.
