Default Mode is a collection of comparatively latter-day thoughts on the themes of alienation, solitude, reflection and regret as well as resignation to the seemingly random consequences of inexorable fate. Composed during a period characterized by an inexplicable millennial frenzy of poetic inspiration that persisted in unevenly distributed bursts of activity between 1998 and 2002, the author makes no attempt to explain why he returned to writing poetry after a twenty-year long hiatus. The surface texture and tone of these poems is very different from the earlier works, but they are married to similar albeit frustratingly unresolved concerns of human emotion and relationships that eternally haunt the poetic consciousness like a dead albatross hanging by a string around the neck of the tormented victim.
