J.R. Smith’s story was already written years ago.
To many, it ended with untapped potential and a laundry list of missteps. But those who stopped reading after the fights, partying and shoelace infractions missed the most important chapter of all.
Hours after Smith and the Cleveland Cavaliers were crowned 2016 NBA champions, fans flocked to the star’s residence bearing gifts.
“Wine, cake, everything,” Smith’s younger brother, Dimitrius, told Today’s Fastbreak.
It sounded near-Biblical.
“Once we got back to the house, every five minutes people were dropping stuff off. Like, right away,” Dimitrius, a senior defensive end for Monmouth University (N.J.), said. “People were pulling up all the time. And it was like that for five whole days. It was crazy.”
Dimitrius drove Smith back from the airport after the 30-year-old famously emerged from the Cavaliers’ plane shirtless.
