Crises of Survival for HBCU's, the Problems and Solutions - Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been a critical mainstay of the black community, economy, social and political leadership landscape since the first was founded in 1837 in the U.S. Today, they are experience an ever more rapidly increasing crisis of survival because of declining funding, poor enrollment and irresponsible administration. Already 11 of these institutions have permanently closed, and currently at least 9 more of the existing 104 HBCU's are in danger of losing their accreditation and closing. The depth of these crises is obvious but viable solutions beyond government patronage have been lacking. We discuss not only the roots of these challenges but some very viable means of overcoming the crisis. One of the readily available solutions is to bind our future to that of emerging Sub-Sahara African nations whose demographics, pace of economic growth and immense natural resources would be readily available to a corrective strategic plan.
