Karate-do is a martial art meaning Way of the Empty Hand. The practice of set forms or patterns is known as kata. For many people, kata are simply routines to be learned in order to pass grades. For us, the analysis of kata reveals practical self defence applications. Analysis is known as bunkai. Application is oyo.
In this video, we take a look at the opening moves of Meikyo. The double hikite is usually described as some sort of preparatory move, yet we want it to have a practical meaning of its own. Here we look at alternave uses, involving close-in defences and retaliations.
John Burke renshi is the author of books and presenter of over 50 instructional DVDs available from the bunkai.co.uk site. He teaches Karate full time and is in demand as a seminar instructor.
