Harlem - The Golden Years - Today's show is very complex and covers more than a century of development of the cultural and wealth of this city which, during the century, was the Black Capital of the World. We begin analyzing the origins of the Harlem Renaissance and many of its major contributors in art, literature, poetry, culture and revolutionary history. Beyond the great record of contributions from names like, Hughes, Cullen, Ellington, Basie, Hurston, Johnson, Beardon and many others, there are the many smaller histories of struggle, creative engagement and defiance. Our research goes on to talk more about the city itself and its life from glory to decay. The way that organized crime, in partnership with the U.S. security establishment, conspired to dump heroin into the socialist-leaning environment of Harlem, eventually destroyed much of the wealth and culture, is very revealing as it did repeat itself in other cities as well. The latest phase of Harlem's evolution is gentrification and the hand of the Clinton Foundation cannot escape our scrutiny. This is a magnificent story that inspired the Hip Hop generation to create anew. (LIBMP3-3537)
