History of Rebellion and Revolt in Brazil, Zumbi and the Quilombos - We kick off our new month of African Global History's Hidden Gems with this story of rebellion in Brazil's African native communities. We begin by citing two great books by Ivan Van Sertima, which establishes our presence in the hemisphere long before Columbus, and Gerald Horne which talks about U.S.-Portuguese collaboration in the slave economy and the origins of the Muslim revolt in Brazil. We learn about the Quilombos, the 2000 still-existent communities founded by liberated Africans. Also detailed is the failed 1836 revolt in Salvador, Brazil, which parallels Nat Turner's rebellion in the U.S. and was modeled after the successful Haitian revolt 1791-1804. The history of Zumbi, the last of the Quilombo chiefs is a very important story as well. We also share numerous links to films which document this very important phase of our western hemisphere history. Now we know! (LIBMP3-3526)
