The skill of mindfulness focuses on being open to new possibilities. One skill of mindfulness is learning how to focus your attention on one thing at a time. This includes being aware of and able to recognise all the things that are going on around you (for example, sights, sounds, smells), as well as all the things that are going on inside you (for example, thoughts, feelings and emotions).
Mindfulness also refers to observing or looking at things as they truly are, as opposed to what we think they are or evaluate them to be or imagine them to be. For example, going into a situation with a preconceived notion of how things will turn out or how we think they ought to be, will almost certainly colour our experience. This can prevent us from getting in touch with the true experience as it is there and then. Being in touch with the present moment as opposed to being caught up in thoughts about the past is a much healthier way to be.
Simply looking at things in an objective way as opposed to labelling them as either “good” or “bad” stop automatic negative thoughts from taking hold and sending us in a downward spiral.
