Description / Objective / Linked materials
This presentation covers some important basic geographical knowledge which from experience often gets missed particularly at ks2. Use this presentation with atlases and a globe. Some very nice animations make it clearer how a flat map is drawn and the land masses distorted. The satellite views give some fascinating insights into our impact on the planet. These are great for class discussion. Be surprised at how few students can name the continents or know what a continent is. Finally teach what latitude and longitude are and how latitude is calculated. I would then give the students a list of cities to find on a map and give the latitude and longitude and see how many use the index. If moving on to some physical geography I would use the Earth’s plates Differentiated Homework here. Assess learning and understanding using the Revise and Test presentations included.
4 lesson units – global view, satellite views, continents and latitude and longitude.
