Variously spelt as "Seiyunchin" or "Seiunchin"/"Seienchin", this kata is the one that Mr Miyagi and Daniel-san are seen practising on the beach in the Karate Kid movie.
In this presentation, nothing to do with the movie, John Burke renshi takes us through some of the practical self-defence applications to the moves in the kata.
Translated as "to pull and control", the movements are used to restrain or deal with an opponent who is attacking with the types of attacks that people really use rather than set combinations from a martial artist's repertoire.
The kata is a fundamental part of Naha-te style of Karate, and although different associations make small adjustments to the performance of the kata, the principles for self-defence remain unchanged.
The video runs to just over 1 hour.
