GSC041 (MONO) - Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni), from Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione, Op. 8 - Benedetto Pavello, violin; Parma Collegium Musicum/Giovanni Pervido - An interesting recording by an obscure regional Italian orchestra and an unknown violin soloist. The recording, made in a large church, uses a chamber organ rather than harpsichord in the figured bass accompaniment, and the violin soloist is miked very closely. One can also hear vehicular traffic in the quieter passages. The original recording contained some balance issues, some very poor edits, including shorn reverb tails and odd pauses, and an occasional incorrect entrance by the orchestra. In spite of these challenges, working with what initially sounded like a semi-pro product, the final result after restoration and editing is actually quite compelling, with very nicely played solo work, mostly well judged tempi, and non-romantic ritardandi redeeming this otherwise budget product.
