KHCD-2014-003FL (STEREO) - Elgar: Cockaigne (In London Town), Op. 40; Chanson de Matin & Chanson de Nuit, Op. 15; Pomp and Circumstance Marches Nos. 1 & 4, Op. 39; Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 20 - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/Pro Arte Orchestra (in Pomp and Circumstance Marches)/George Weldon - This is a very special recording; possibly the most refined playing of well-known Elgar pieces available. George Weldon was a vastly underrated conductor, possibly due to his unfussy, play-what-is-on-the-page approach. Originally recorded by EMI, and released briefly on World Record Club, this is a perfect example of how Elgar’s music can be approached with restraint and respect. Transcribed with care by John Whitmore. Highly recommended. Cover art included in download.
