Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3/Violin Concerto - Jenner/Cyroulnik
KHCD-2014-002DL (MONO/STEREO) - Beethoven: Concerto No. 3 in c minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 37 - Alexander Jenner, piano; Vienna Volksoper Orchestra/Kurt Richter (mono recording); Concerto in D major for Violin and Orchestra, op. 61 - Charles Cyroulnik, violin; Orchestre de l'Association des Concerts Colonne/Pierre Dervaux (stereo recording) - Pianist Alexander Jenner did not record much during his active career, and the recordings he made were with Remington and some lesser known European labels. The performances themselves, however, are of very high quality, as is this transcription of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3. The mono recording, originally recorded by Bertlesmann Schallplattenring in the mid-50s, is warm, reverberant but well balanced, and the playing by both pianist and orchestra is regal and well-paced. The Violin Concerto is also a performance of very high quality; the violinist/pedagogue Charles Cyroulnik plays with a sweet-toned presence, ably accompanied by the French orchestra (the woodwinds lending a very special quality to the proceedings). Both recordings were transcribed from World Record Club LPs by my UK colleague John Whitmore.
