Throwing American Style Raku Pottery
Learn to make pottery on the wheel quickly and professionally with this sure-fire, accelerated approach!
Throwing Raku style pottery is very similar to throwing any other type of pottery except for the type of clay used. Most beginning videos teaching how to throw on the potter’s wheel leave out some of the most fundamental aspects of the process.
Our video focuses on the three most important aspects in throwing pottery: Centering – Opening – Pulling
With these three movements, you'll quickly be able to form a cylinder and from there, anything you desire. Your host Robert Briggs takes you step-by-step through the pottery throwing experience by discussing the types of tools required, the differences in the various clays used for throwing, and preparing your work area. The video takes the student through several camera angles of the procedures with cutaways to graphics showing the positions and how to apply the techniques. This isn't just someone throwing a pot and expecting you to follow. There are also sections for shaping and trimming your piece when you have learned to throw basic forms.
