Susie Orbach is a psychoanalyst and writer

whose interests have centred on feminism &

psychoanalysis, the construction of femininity and

gender, globalisation & body image, emotional

literacy; and psychoanalysis in the public sphere. She

is currently Chair of the Relational School in the UK.

Susie’s work in these areas has been prolific. She

has published hundreds of articles and reviews in

professional journals and other publications, give

talks and seminars throughout the world, written a

column in the Guardian newspaper and written

many books, including the classic Fat is a Feminist

Issue, along with such other influential texts as

Hunger Strike, What Do Women Want (with Luise

Eichenbaum), The Impossibility of Sex and her latest

book Bodies. She recently co-edited Fifty Shades of

Feminism, which was published early this year. She

provides psychotherapy to individuals, couples and

groups and supervision to therapists working in

diverse institutions including The Tavistock, Arbours,

University College Hospital, St George’s Medical

School, The King’s Fund and numerous NHS posts.

Susie co-founded The Women’s Therapy Centre,

London, in 1976, which is an outpatient facility

providing psychotherapy and counselling to 2000

women annually and in-service training programs for

mental health professionals. The Centre aims to raise

the profile of mental health and women’s needs in the

UK and develop strategy for gender sensitive mental

health delivery.

She is also co-founder and co-director of The

Women’s Therapy Centre Institute, New York; a

post-graduate training institute offering a 3 year training in

psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Susie has been a consultant to the World Bank, the

British NHS and Unilever. She is a founding

member of ANTIDOTE, (working for emotional literacy),

Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social

Responsibility and is convener of Endangered

Bodies, the organization campaigning against body

hatred. She is also an expert member of the

steering group of the British government’s Campaign

for Body Confidence.
