A House Divided: Civil War Suite
This work was commissioned for the 2002 Blue and Grey Reunion Civil War Reenactment of the First Land Battle of the War which took place in Philippi.
A musical suite in 5 movements depicting a day in which a Major Battle of the American Civil War too place.
It is Orchestral in nature and was written in the style of a high-budget motion picture score, with sound effects and dialog interspersed throughout.
1- First Light: a musical depiction of a small town, Sunday morning, waking up and setting the scene.
2- Soldiers Dreams: As the Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry enter town, a musical into the thoughts and emotions of these fighting men.
3- Battle: From the sounds of bagpipes to a full artillery barrage, the sound of a major battle are presented in vivid form.
4- Aftermath: Walking through a field hospital at battles' end, segueing into an arrangement of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" with "Dixie" overlaid in wonderful counterpoint.
5- Celebration: The finale which culminates in a Sousa-esque arrangement of the drum and fife tune, "The Downfall of Paris"
