Under perceived threatening conditions, mankind still resorts to a primitive escape mechanism called the “fight or flight” syndrome – our hearts pump harder, adrenaline rushes through our system, blood pressure rises, we breathe more quickly – and our muscles tense. This reaction, gearing us for a physical confrontation, was suitable in prehistoric times when we hunted, and were too often hunted for food.
More recently, living in our “concrete” jungle, we do not always have the same opportunity to release this stress in physical activity. Can we really “fight” our jobs...the traffic...our busy schedules...or alarm clocks? Unable to “fight”, now what? The next reaction is “flight” which in present day life can prove just as impractical.
