This royalty free fine art digital image displays the oil on canvas Prometheus Bound by Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, painted between 1612 - 1618. As I recall from Greek mythology, Prometheus was a titan who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humans. To punish such thieving presumption, Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock and condemned him to have his liver eaten out every day by an eagle. The liver always grows back so that the suffering of Prometheus can go on for eternity. I was always struck by this vindictive story, and this painting by the great master Rubens is so powerful that it is painful. The central placement of the eagle as it dominates Prometheus' writhing body illustrates his hopeless plight. The talons gripping his head make me flinch. This painting makes dread and fear visible.
