Special Education Teacher Guide for the Autism Student

About this item:

Children diagnosed with autism have been on the rise. Although each student is unique and special, students with autism have distinctive challenges to others students when it comes to the classroom. Students with autism perceive their environments differently than others. It is important for schools to accommodate to meet the needs of students with autism to give them access to general education curriculum, while also addressing their unique social cognitive needs. This guide will give instructions and examples to four research-based classroom strategies. General education and special education teachers can use these time effective and easy to use strategies to increase the success of students with autism in their classroom.

I have worked with children with autism since 1999 as a group home employee, classroom instructional assistant, respite and recreational provider, camp counselor, special education teacher and family advocate. I also provide staff development to special and general education teachers on research based classroom strategies, special education law and the importance of teaching social cognitive skills. Although many of the strategies in this book are research based, my recommendations are based on my personal experiences working with students with autism.
